The drum is the oldest instrument in the world and an ancient way in which people have communicated with each other and still do to this day! When we think of Africa, we often think of drumming. Ghana Mbaye, aka "Brother Ghana", was born in Senegal and moved to the U.S. in 2000 and brought his passion for music with him. He has become a master percussionist and performs regularly with many groups. In this vibrant class, students will learn about his culture and drums such as the djembe, dun dun, sangba and kenkeni and will have a fun, hands-on experience playing them. This class will resonate within each student for years to come!
Ghana was born in Senegal, West Africa. His music is inspired by the spiritual songs and rhythms of the Baye Fall, a unique group within the Muslim religion, characterized spiritually by their dedication to hard work, education and tranquility. Ghana performs with various world music groups around the Twin Cities. Since moving to the United States in 2000, he has committed his life to teaching African drumming.
Ghana can bring up to 25 drums. He begins the program with a personal introduction then teaches about the drum and origins. He starts the rhythm with laps, claps and chest (body rhythm) and then divides the group into two and rotates and takes turns. Additionally, he teaches African songs and dances and takes questions at the end.
